2 Samuel 23:13-17 (NKJV) 13 Then three of the thirty chief men went down at harvest time and came to David at the cave of Adullam. And the troop of Philistines encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 And David said with longing, “Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” 16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord. 17 And he said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men.

David grew up in Bethlehem, and he reminisced about the refreshing water from the well there. To David it was the most delicious, thirst quenching, and satisfying water. For he was raised on it. The thought of the refreshing waters of Bethlehem took him back to his boyhood. A time of innocence and worry free. And David longed for water from the well at Bethlehem. He never commanded anyone to get him water, but three of his mighty men, at the risk of their lives, broke through the garrison of the Philistines to get it for him. They heard David’s wish and they brought it to fruition. And David was so overcome by their sacrifice that he poured out the water as a drink offering to the LORD. I think of the Lord Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19-20 to preach the gospel in all the world. And I think of those who hear the longing of His heart, and like these mighty men of David, they risk their lives to take the gospel to those who needs to hear the message of salvation. They lay down their lives to reach people who are held hopelessly in the power of Satan. They break through the enemy lines to bring them to the Lord Jesus Christ, just as the water in the well of Bethlehem was in the hand of the Philistines. These are mighty men and women of Christ.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
