Genesis 3:20-21 (NKJV) 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
Adam displayed faith in calling his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living, but no baby had ever been born up to this time. And you see, no child was born in the Garden of Eden. Cain and Abel were born after the fall of Adam and Eve. Even after they committed sin, God still cared for them by making them clothing of skins before Adam and Eve left the Garden. It is interesting to note, that their clothing was made of animal hide. It may be that the animal was sacrificed as a sin offering. And if so, you see there are still consequences for sin. I would imagine, that when Adam and Eve looked back at the garden when they were leaving, they saw what God had Moses put on the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies: two cherubim looking down upon the blood that was there. And that was the way to God. A sacrifice was needed for the forgiveness of sin. Later the sin offering was instituted by God, but it had to be repeated. The shed blood of Jesus Christ on the Cross on Calvary was the final sacrifice for the sins of the world. The prefect Lamb of God was slain for the remission of sin. The lessons that we learn from the fig leaves and the fact that God clothed Adam and Eve with skins points us to the Cross. Frist, we must have adequate covering to approach God. We cannot come to God on the basis of our good works. We must come just as we are, a sinner seeking forgiveness. Second, fig leaves are unacceptable because they are manmade solutions to the problem of sin. God does not accept manmade solutions. Anyone can come to God for forgiveness of sin, but he or she must come to Him by way of His Son Jesus Christ. Third, God must provide the covering for sin. It is only by the blood of Jesus that our sins are washed away. It is only by the righteousness of Christ that we can boldly come before God. And lastly, the covering is obtained only through the death of the Lord Jesus. Jesus is the way. Salvation is through no other, “for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12 NKJV). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18 NKJV).
God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
