James 4:7-10 (NKJV) 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

In verses 7–10, we are given six steps to true repentance. When God’s Word has pierced your heart like arrows of conviction. When you realize that God is speaking directly to you, and your heart has bowed beneath the influence of His Word. And you are ready to repent, then the first thing you should do is to submit to God. Subject yourself to God, be ready to listen to Him and obey Him. Humble yourself before God. For God gives grace unto the humble. Be tender and contrite, not proud and stiff-necked. Secondly, you must resist the devil by closing your ears, eyes, minds and hearts to his suggestions and temptations. Use the Scriptures as the Sword of the Spirit to repel his deceitful lies and wicked ways. When you resist the devil, he will flee from you. Third, draw near to God through desperate and believing prayer. Tell God all that is on your heart. Draw near to God, and you will find that He will draw near to you. God comes to the door of your heart but you must let Him in. When God is dwelling in you, the devil will flee from you because the devil does not like God’s company. The devil will get farther away from you as you get closer to God. The fourth step is to cleanse your hands and purify your heart. Meaning, clean up your actions, the things that you do. And purify your motives and desires. Confess your sins, all your evil acts, and forsake it, both outwardly and inwardly. Confess your hidden agendas that are sinful and are not pure at heart. The fifth step is to never treat sin lightly. Mourn over your sins, don’t delight in it. Don’t make excuses for your sins. Own up to it. Confess your sins with deep sorrow, and submit to God and let Him deal with the sins in your life. Yes, it may hurt, but sin must be dealt with. Don’t ignore it. Don’t make light of it. Confess your sins and let God deal with it. Finally, humble yourself before God and weep over your materialism, legalism, secularism and formalism. And any other isms in your life, like liberalism and good-ism. Give it all up to God. Prostrate yourself before God, get down where God can lift you up. Manifest the fruit of godly repentance, and let God take control of your life. These are the ways that we should respond when the Lord Jesus Christ exposes our sins to ourselves.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
