Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

The coming of the wise men from the East to Jerusalem really alarmed Herod the king. The Bible does not give us the number of wise men who came to Jerusalem, but the numbers in their caravan must have been quite large to have disturbed Herod or to raise the curiosity of the people in Jerusalem. The wise men came from different areas from the East. Each of them was studying the stars, and when a new star appeared in the West, they teamed up together and journeyed west to Jerusalem. They were looking for the One who was born the King of the Jews. And that was the thing that actually angered Herod. For he was Jerusalem’s king. And he was not about to give up his throne. How did the wise men associate the new star that appeared towards the west of them with a king? And how did they know to travel to Jerusalem? It could be that they were all aware of the prophecy given by Balaam which was given to the people in that section of the East, most likely Persia. Balaam’s prophecy is recorded for us in Numbers 24:17 (NKJV), he said, “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult.” This prophecy foretold the arrival of the Messiah, and that might have been how they knew. Or it could be that the arrival of the Messiah could have been communicated to them supernaturally. Or it could have been both. Nevertheless, regardless of how the wise men knew that a new star, the Star of Bethlehem which they called His Star, would appear in the West over Israel when the King of the Jews was born. The Bible tells us that when they saw the new star appear in the West, they came out of the East to Jerusalem seeking the King of the Jews to worship Him. Now, why would wise men of Eastern culture go to Jerusalem to worship the Messiah? The only answer could be is that they believed God’s Word. They searched for the Messiah because they believed in Him, that through Him they can have salvation. Therefore, they humbled themselves to worship the Lord Jesus Christ. My friend, all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and seek after Him will find Him. And all who worship Him are truly wise, for theirs is salvation by the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
