1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NKJV) 12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
We are told that we ought to know or understand those who teach the Word of God. Why? Because it makes us teachable and it brings peace in the church. Every believer is given a spiritual gift at the time they are saved. Some are given the gift of preaching, some are given the gift of teaching, some are given the gift of helping, every believer is given a gift. And that gift is to be used for the edification and benefit of the body of believers within the church. Now the problem they had in Thessalonica, is the same problem we have today in the church. People are to prideful to be taught. They say, “I know more of the Bible than so and so, how can that person teach me!” Or they say, “I can’t listen to a pastor when I know more about the Bible than the pastor!” Or they say, “I know more about doctrine and theology than any professor, what can they teach me!” For this reason, the Apostle Paul tells us that certain men and women are given certain gifts of leadership in the church, and we should respect them. We should look to them for authoritative and godly counsel. My friends, if we say we believe the Bible is the very spoken Word of God and we believe every word He said. Then we should obey His Word. Paul is telling us this very thing. Paul tells us, that we ought to respect the people who God places in leadership positions in the church. And we should listen when the Word of God is being taught. Because we ae obligated to know what the Bible says. Therefore, we ought to give our full attention to what is being taught from the Word of God. We ought to esteem those who are preaching and teaching the Word of God. We ought to show them loving kindness and gratitude for their work’s sake. Meaning, if we love the Word of God, then we ought to love those who preach and teach the truth of God’s Word. Because it shows just how much we really love the Word of God. And when we respect the leadership in the church, then there will be peace. Paul’s instructions to the Thessalonians are still beneficial to us today. Oh, how we need to obey God’s Word.
God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
