Ephesians 5:18-21 (NKJV) 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

The Apostle Paul is not giving a lecture on the sins of drunkenness, rather Paul is making a comparison. You see people feel a need for something, so they fill themselves with alcohol. But being drunk from alcohol is a temporary stimulus that leads to reckless wastefulness and immoral behavior that will leave you in a state of desperation, despair and delirium tremens. This is not what a child of God needs. A child of God is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This experience is beneficial, and it is what believers need. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a divine intoxication, if you will, that fills the God shape void in our hearts. The Holy Spirit fills all our needs for dynamic living and for accomplishing something for God. Being filled with the Holy Spirit also means that our lives are controlled by Him, so that we walk carefully and circumspectly. So that our fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ is evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. This is why it is so important that believers start the day asking the LORD for an infilling of the Holy Spirit. You see my friends, when you are filled with the Spirit you will do something for God, you will be walking in the Spirit. What are some of the evidences of being filled with the Holy Spirit? It is “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” This is the manifestation of the infilling of the Holy Spirit because He brings joy into the lives of believers and they radiate the joy of the LORD. Another set of evidences of being filled with the Holy Spirit is “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.” My friends, the Holy Spirit produces a life of thankfulness so that we can wholeheartedly give thanks to God for all things. And so that we can walk with all lowliness of heart and meekness with one another in the love of Christ. This is so crucial for the local church today. We need to work together as equals under the leadership of our Lord Jesus Christ to get the Word out. Submitting ourselves one to another in the fear of God is an important evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
