Colossians 4:2-4 (NKJV) 2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, 4 that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
To pray and watch means to pray and take action. Remember when Jesus sent out seventy disciples into the mission field? See this in Luke chapter 10. In verses 2 and 3 it says, “Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way…”” here Jesus was telling them, in not so many words, “pray for more laborers and then go your way as laborers into the harvest.” And remember when Nehemiah was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem? He faced skeptics, and he faced enemies. So, how did Nehemiah respond to the threat of enemies? This is what Nehemiah did. He says that he knew that the threat of enemies was very real, “Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.” Here Nehemiah is saying, in not so many words, “we prayed and we did something about it.” In these two examples we can find what the Apostle Paul means when he says “continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” He is saying pray and do something about it. As the old illustration goes, “When a framer prays for a good harvest, God expects him to say ‘Amen’ with a hoe.” My friend, if you are praying for something, then do something about. This is so practical. And be sure to thank God always. Because God hears our prayers and He will answer our prayers. But remember God answers prayers in His time and according to His way, for He knows when to act, and He knows what is best. And another thing about prayer is to pray for those who are in ministry. Pray that God will continue to open doors for them to share the gospel of Christ. Every aspect of ministry is a door, and we are to ask God to keep the doors open. And we ought to be faithful to walk through the doors that God opens for us. We should keep Revelation 3:8 (NKJV) as an encouragement from God in which our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.” God sets before us a lot of open doors, and we ought to be faithful to walk through them. And we ought to ask God to open even more doors.
God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
