Mark 15:16-19 (NKJV) 16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, 18 and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.

These soldiers were a brutal lot, and they had the authority to do whatever they wanted to the prisoner short of killing the prisoner. They humiliated the prisoner and tortured the prisoner. And that is what they did with Jesus. They blindfold Him and they viciously beat His face to a pulp until His entire face was bleeding and swollen beyond recognition. Then they mocked Him by putting a purple robe and crown of thorns on Him, and laughingly calling Him “King of the Jews.” They beaten Him unmercifully and they viciously mocked Him. They kept on hitting Him and spitting on Him all the way to Calvary. The hatred of these soldiers demonstrates how brutal and cruel the human heart is. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ endured it all for us. Jesus took our place. And the Cross was still before Him. My friends, Jesus’ death on the Cross was a substitutional sacrifice. Jesus died so that we could live. Jesus paid it all, and all to Him we owe.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
