Matthew 22:37-38 (NKJV) 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment.”
When Jesus was asked “which is the great commandment in the law?” Notice that Jesus did not pick any one of the Ten Commandments. Instead, Jesus pointed out our obligation to God as the first and great commandment. It is our first obligation to love God with our entire being. Then Jesus gives us a second one. “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:39 NKJV). When we put this down on our lives, we soon recognize that we fall short of the glory of God. Jesus masterfully summarizes the commandments in just these two commandments. Jesus says, “these are the greatest commandments; to love God is the greatest, and to love your neighbor is the next greatest.” To emphasize this, Jesus says, “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:40 NKJV). These two commandments summarize the entire Mosaic Law. And in just these two commandments, any one who is honest with themselves would admit that he or she cannot be saved by the Law. We, my friends, do need a Savior. Only when we are born again can we keep these two commandments, because the Lord Jesus Christ can do it through us.
God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
