Jeremiah 22:24-30 (NKJV) 24 “As I live,” says the Lord, “though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; 25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans. 26 So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. 27 But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return. 28 “Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol— A vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, he and his descendants, And cast into a land which they do not know? 29 O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the Lord! 30 Thus says the Lord: ‘Write this man down as childless, A man who shall not prosper in his days; For none of his descendants shall prosper, Sitting on the throne of David, And ruling anymore in Judah.’”

This is a stern message to Coniah, who is Jehoiachin who was also known as Jeconian, the fourth king. Why does God call Jeconiah, Coniah, leaving out the “Je” in Jeconiah? It is because “JE” stands for Jehovah, and God does not want to be identified with Jeconiah because of his wickedness. God goes on to say to Coniah, Why if you “were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off.” Coniah will be taken captive by the Babylonians and he would die in Babylon. None of Coniah descendants would sit on the throne of David. Coniah’s uncle would be the last king of Judah. The throne of David was vacant since then. But Jeremiah had another prophecy concerning the throne of David, and it is found in Jeremiah 33:17 (NKJV), it says “For thus says the Lord: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.” God had Someone in mind to sit on the throne of David, but He will not be a descendant of Coniah. God cut off the descendants of Coniah whose father was Jehoiakim who is a descendant of Solomon the son of David. Joseph was a descendant of David through Coniah, and it gave to Jesus the legal title to the throne. But Joseph was not the father of Jesus for Jesus is virgin born. Mary is also a descendant of David through Nathan, David’s third son, the older brother of Solomon. There is no curse on the descendants of Nathan and no judgment on them. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was virgin born, and He is a descendant of David through Mary. It is through Mary that Jesus got the blood title to the throne of David. This is the way that God worked out His covenant with David: “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever” (2 Samuel 7:12-13 NKJV). This is remarkable, and God calls the earth to listen: “O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the Lord!” God wants all the people on the earth to see that this is the way He has worked out His plan of salvation. No one is able to prevent God from accomplishing His purposes. God brought judgment on Coniah; yet God was able to fulfill His promise that the coming Messiah would be a descendant of David.

God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
