John 8:34-38 (NKJV) 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. 37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.”
The people of Jerusalem were not free physically, nor were they free spiritually. Those who opposed Jesus claimed to be descendants of Abraham but they sought to kill Jesus. Now to the matter of sin, Jesus says “whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” The question then is, can a believer sin? I know there are a whole lot of believers who consider themselves to be sinless. That they no longer sin, but it is doubtful that any of us can go through the day without sinning. That is just the nature of our flesh, our old nature is a slave to sin. But being a child of God we ought to come to the Father every day and confess our sins. This is something that a child of the Devil will never do. Paul tells us in Romans 6:16 (NKJV), “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” And so Jesus said to the religious rulers, “And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever” (Romans 8:35 NKJV). A true child of God abides with the Father forever, but a servant does not stay with the Father. There are many liberal and carnal Christians today who are servants. They come to the House of the Lord to worship and praise God. But when church is done, they leave and serve their real father, and that would be the Devil. A true child of God abides with the Father forever. Meaning, rather in church or out of church, and in public or in private, a true child of God abides in Christ. They are abiding in Jesus and Jesus is abiding in them. For they are no longer a slave to sin because the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has set them free. My friends, we do not have to be a slave to sin. We can come to God each day and confess our sins. And we can keep the Word of God in the sanctuary of our hearts where the Holy Spirit of God can use it to transform our lives. That we may confess with our lives that we are a true child of God.
God Bless and have a great day in God’s Word.
